Monopoly Surprise Exclusive Tokens Guide (2022)
If you are a bit of a Monopoly Aficionado like myself, you won’t just be on the hunt for rare and exclusive Monopoly editions, but also have a keen passion to collect anything Monopoly related – especially unique tokens!
Well, it looks like I am not the only person with this fixation and Hasbro in their wisdom, have released a series of Monopoly Surprise Boxes and Monopoly Surprise Community Chests which are stuffed full of unique tokens and other Monopoly collectibles!
There are two sets of collectibles to collect and I have spent a month buying multiple versions of each one to try and hunt down all of the collectibles! Below I am going to give you the full contents of every box (and the box serial numbers you need to look out for to get the exact ones too!)
Monopoly Surprise Boxes
What is a Monopoly Surprise Box?
These small boxes contain five Monopoly collectibles. There is an outer box, which contains a small inner box. You must open the top of the outer box to pull out the inner box.
The inner box has various Monopoly-style markings on it, such as some of the famous spaces or properties (the ones I had were imports) – they had U.K. British places, such as Mayfair, Oxford Street and Regent Street on them.
On each side of the inner box is a cut-out shape of a famous Monopoly item (a car, train, the Monopoly Money ‘M’ symbol, etc) – you can push your finger through any of these and pull out a small plastic collectible (which is wrapped in red plastic)
How many Monopoly Surprise Boxes are there?
There are six different Monopoly Surprise boxes to collect. Each one of them has a unique serial number stamped at the bottom of each box. If you buy two boxes with the same serial number on them, you will get identical contents in both boxes!
Each box contains five items of which are rated either ‘Common’ ‘Super Rare’ or ‘Ultra Rare’.
In total the entire collection is made up of 21 unique items – however, certain items (the Monopoly houses specifically) are repeated throughout all the boxes (which makes sense!).
- 13 Common items (Green)
- 4 Super Rare items (Yellow)
- 4 Ultra Rare items (Blue)
What is inside each Monopoly Surprise Box?
Each of the six boxes contains the following as standard:
- Inner box with tear-out sides
- Five Monopoly collectibles wrapped individually in red plastic
- Monopoly Surprise Exclusive Collectible Tokens Checklist
The checklist is identical in every box, you only need one to fill out and tick off the tokens you collect.
The checklist also lets you know the rarity of each of the tokens – either green, yellow or blue. There is a downloaded PDF version of the checklist, by the company that makes the tokens for Hasbro. You can download the Token Checklist here.
Box 1
This is a very common box and pretty easy to find. As it is the starting box there appears to be a lot more of this number around!
As you collect the boxes you’ll soon start to get quite a collection of the little green houses!

Box two also contains common items and the cup is a nice touch (but there is a better one in the Surprise Community Chests!)

Box 4
Box 4 is the last of the common boxes and is marked with two more green houses and Mr Monopoly holding a chunk of cash in the air!

This is the first of the rare boxes – four of the five items in this box are labelled as ‘Super Rare’ in the Exclusive Tokens Checklist – the Gold Monopoly Credit Card was my favorite!

Box 6
This is the final box in the collection and the hardest to find (it took me a lot of boxes to get this in the end – but it was worth it – I love the Monopoly Gold ingot!) – the train is a nice touch and Mr Monopoly is holding a cute little present!

How much are the Monopoly Boxes?
They vary in range. I have seen them as cheap as just $7 at Walmart, but finding them was another story altogether – either out of stock or hidden away from the rest of the toys. However, you can order them from some individual sellers on Amazon and there are plenty for sale on eBay cheaper (in multi-packs).
How do I find out which Monopoly Box I need?
Easy! Look for these small serial numbers stamped on the bottom of each box – do not get them confused with the barcode – those are all the same!

Monopoly Surprise Community Chests
In addition to the Monopoly Surprise Boxes, there is also a range of Monopoly Surprise Community Chests!
These chests contain double the number of tokens in each (ten instead of five) and there are fewer Chests to collect (just three compared to six Monopoly Surprise Boxes).
Additionally, the tokens in the Community Chests are all gold and I feel are of much better quality (as a collector at least!)
What is a Monopoly Surprise Community Chest?
These plastic chests each contain ten varying tokens, with three different sets to collect to make a total of 27 different tokens.
Inside are ten individually wrapped tokens and a token checklist for you to mark off the ones you have collected.
There are only three unique chests to collect and then you have the full collection!
How many Monopoly Surprise Community Chests are there?
There are three Chests to collect. There is some variation in them, over here in the USA they are different colors (red, blue and yellow) but in Europe, they appear to be all blue and you can only distinguish the difference between them by checking out the unique serial number on the base of each one.
What is inside each Monopoly Surprise Community Chest?
Each of the three Chests contains the following as standard:
- Tough plastic box with two-inner layer temporary plastic casing
- Ten Monopoly collectibles wrapped individually in red plastic
- Monopoly Surprise Community Chest Checklist
The checklist is identical in each chest and you only need to fill out and tick off the tokens you have collected.
Just like the Boxes, the checklist for the Chests also lets you know the rarity of each of the 27 tokens. This time there they are graded as Common, Rare or Ultra Rare.
Chest 1
In the first chest we get two Monopoly Hotels (which go well with the Monopoly Houses in the Surprise Boxes!) and some new large monetary tokens, as well as some luxurious gold tokens!

The second chest might be one of the best out there – you get a gold Monopoly dice! (Hint: Buy two of this chest to get a pair of golden dice for all your monopoly games!) – Only one hotel in this box!

In the final chest, you get the biggest Monopoly monetary token ever – 1million M!
The building is pretty cool and the Mr Monopoly’s are great quality like in Chest 1 and 2.

How much are the Monopoly Community Chests?
The Chests range from $10-$15 depending on if you find them in a sale or not. You may also find people selling them in complete bundles of 3 for $30. Look around on eBay and Amazon.
How do I find out which Monopoly Community Chest I need?
Pretty easy as there are only three. You just need to look for the small serial numbers at the bottom of each box – again, don’t get them confused with the barcodes as they are all the same!

Final Thoughts
I love these official, individual token collectible boxes and chests – I think they are a great little addition to anyone who loves Monopoly and I especially love the fact I now have a pair of golden dice to replace the existing silver dice I usually use.
If you follow my hint above as I did, you’ll end up with a pair of golden Monopoly dice – which for any serious Monopoly player is a must!
The attention to detail in the Surprise Community Chests is worth the extra cost (and they are relatively easier to collect too!) – but you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to pick up one of the boxes if you see them around. They make the perfect Christmas or Birthday little gift to someone who loves Monopoly!
Interestingly, all the Surprise Boxes are listed as Series 1 and the Surprise Chests have no series number on them (but they are often referenced as Series 2 – though there is nothing offical out there to list them as that!)
